Abstract

The elderly are biopsychosocial beings who are immersed in a specific time and context. In this sense, hospitals and residential centers are private or governmental institutions that provide attention and care to their residents using in certain cases physical restraint to prevent falls. The objective of the research is to provide evidence of the current literature on the use or non-use of physical restraints, types of restraints and training of personnel in the care of the elderly in hospital institutions or residential centers. Methodology: the study was framed in Arksey and O'Malley (2005); the starting point was a research question, a descriptive review was carried out through a literature search in PubMed, Google Scholar, AGS, JAN, BMC and doctoral theses entering the terms: care, physical restraint, restraints, quality of life and institutionalized elderly, studies were selected that met certain inclusion criteria, information was collated and summarized in a table, in addition to answering the questions posed. Results: 17 current studies were selected that generated the following categories: the use of care with or without physical restraints on the elderly in hospital institutions and residential care centers, types of physical restraints and staff training. Conclusions: physical restraints in the care of the elderly are important for physical safety, but they damage their mental and functional health. Changes or new organizational policies or other alternatives are needed to avoid the use of physical restraints. Focus on the Elderly Person, to contribute to their physical and mental health. If so, the quality of life in old age will be adequate because currently, physical restraints have no place due to the dignity to which this population group is entitled.
