The objective of this article is to analyze the professional functions inherent to social work. The categories of analysis that were addressed are social research, social planning and programming, social execution, evaluation of social plans, programs and projects, and the systematization of professional experience. It is a documentary study, since the search for printed and digital information in specialized social work books and articles was used.
The results make it visible that the substantive professional functions of social work are linked to the methodologies of the discipline and profession. Functions that have significant regularity in professional know-how regardless of the area and field of intervention. Furthermore, it was found that in current contexts, emerging professional functions have emerged such as expertise, social mediation, crisis intervention, palliative care, thanatology, social support, peace education, social entrepreneurship, construction. of citizenship, democratic intervention, gender and human rights education, environmental education, intervention with migrants, to name a few. Professional activities that require being theorized and incorporated into social work curricula at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
